Moving to a Retirement Community? Advice on What to Bring

Seniors moving

Moving to a retirement community is a big event, but one way to simplify the process is knowing what to bring. At Sonrisa Senior Living we pride ourselves on providing most of what our residents need for an active and fulfilling retirement. We also want our residents to make their luxury apartments their homes with everything they cherish and want to keep. Here’s a look at what many Sonrisa residents bring when they join our luxury retirement community.

Furniture – The beautiful retirement community apartments at Sonrisa Senior Living are designed to allow residents to furnish them as they like. While it may take a little time to assess which furniture will enhance each room, in general, residents bring living room furniture, bedroom suites, dining room tables and chairs, desks, shelves, and patio/balcony furniture. A good rule of thumb is to use the floorplan for the new apartment when downsizing to choose which furniture is the best fit, well before moving day. To find out how to downsize with ease, read our blog, “5 Tips for Smooth & Easy Downsizing.” 5 Tips for Smooth & Easy Downsizing in Retirement

Accent décor – A big part of creating a welcoming and comfortable retirement community apartment is accent décor which enhances the resident’s style. For example, rugs, art and photographs, drapes, mirrors, and plants all add to the overall ambiance of a senior’s apartment. Some residents also add special touches with paint and unique lighting and use pro decorating tricks like those described in our blog, How to Make Your Retirement Home Look Great Without Hiring a Pro Decorator

Personal entertainment – Although Sonrisa Senior Living is a luxury retirement community offering an abundance of amenities and entertainment options, our residents also enjoy having their own books, games, hobby supplies, and electronics on hand. So, when packing for a move to a retirement community be sure to include televisions, music players, smart devices, computers, tablets or iPads, and cell phones, as well as all cords and chargers. What is not on the list is subscriptions to cable or the internet because they are included!

Keepsakes – Moving to a retirement community does not mean leaving keepsakes and memorabilia behind. Retirement is a new beginning, not an ending and residents should feel free to bring all those items that remind them of fun times, good friends, and loved ones. To avoid clutter and make keepsakes a focal point is to display them in different rooms, alone on tables, grouped on walls, and arranged on shelves. For a really unique way to make the most of keepsakes and memorabilia, check out the Better Homes & Gardens article, Creative Ways to Display Antiques and Collectibles.

Kitchenware – The kitchen is often the heart of a home, so be sure to pack kitchenware for the move to a retirement community. Sonrisa kitchens are already stocked with excellent appliances and beautiful cabinets so residents can move right in without worry. Before packing, sort through kitchenware and eliminate duplicates. Then pack all the necessities including dinnerware, glasses, silverware, knives and utensils, pots and pans, and small appliances like mixers, blenders, food processors, and coffee machines. To get a feel for how to maximize and organize a smaller kitchen, the marthastewart.com blog, How to Organize Your Small Kitchen for Maximum Efficiency. offers great tips.

Bedding, linens, and towels – Sonrisa residents decorate their homes themselves and that includes bedding, linens, and towels. Favorite bedspreads, comfy organic cotton sheets, and fluffy towels are another way to make an apartment home and express the resident’s taste and style. At Sonrisa, we also provide washers and dryers in every apartment, as well as a very handy linen service so our residents have more time to just enjoy themselves!
